  • in reply to: Unsteady Dynamic Model? What is it? #11111

The definition of dynamic is “(of a process or system) characterized by constant change, activity, or progress.” It shows up throughout the H&H world, for example, HEC-RAS is a “hydrodynamic” model. Meaning it models the dynamics (i.e., changes) of a hydraulic system.

I would not get too caught up in it’s use or where it ‘fits’. Dynamic generally refers to unsteady flow modeling with a hydraulic model (e.g., HEC-RAS). The word ‘dynamic’ is sometimes followed by the word ‘routing’, because the model is routing (i.e., moving) flow through the system while accounting for changes in conveyance (flow) and storage (volume) ‘dynamically’ in space and time. So I think the word ‘dynamic’ is used loosely as a catch all for a model that simulates changes or a system that experiences changes over time and space.

Instead of focusing on the word dynamic, focus on learning the difference between Unsteady state hydraulic routing (i.e. typically this is what dynamic routing / modeling refers to) and hydrologic routing (for example using Modified Puls in HEC-HMS). Hydrologic routing is generally a simplified ‘version’ of Unsteady state hydraulic analysis, but can give similar results depending on the situation. In some situations where the system (i.e. river, etc.) is complex, hydrologic routing simply can not model the complex ‘dynamics’ of how water moves through and is stored in the system, so you then use Unsteady state hydraulics.

Hope that helps. If anyone else wants to chime in to give a more specific answer / opinion, I’d be interested to see what others think.

    Regards,

How much is the difference in depth/elevation at the boundary b/w the two floodplains?

You could do a combined 1D/2D model where the channel is 1D up to the banks and the shared floodplain is 2D. Whether this is acceptable depends on whether your project and client (and FEMA in this case?) will accept a combined 1D/2D model.

The advise to extend your cross-section will generally work if you have a floodplain with an increasing cross slope where eventually you have ground elevations greater than your water surface elevation.

However, if you keep extending your xsec and the ground is essentially flat, or you have a ridge and then the ground slopes down / away with the water surface above the ridge, then you may need to convert all or portions of your overbanks to 2D to best represent those areas. If you get into this situation as a beginner, it’s best you have someone review it and provide guidance. If you are not using unsteady and thus can’t use 2D, then it gets more challenging/less accurate but it can be accomplished in steady flow.

    Hey Andy,

    Couple thoughts:

    – Change the internal culvert xsec to represent the culvert (would typically do this in unsteady, unsure how much benefit it would provide in steady) or if you really think the channel is not going to get washed out in these events consider a using a blocked culvert. Roughly 1/3 of the culvert area is lower than the xsec invert, which a lot of times would cause major issues.
    – Consider a lateral/distributed inflow along the lateral structure instead of a single point inflow. Or consider moving the point inflow to xsec 1.
    – Start the lateral structure after xsec 1. basically give xsec 2 a break, there’s too much happening at the culvert
    – Confirm that the ridge in your left bank should not be blocked/leveed
    – Lower your ineffective areas at your deck a bit below the deck. Having them match the deck exactly is begging for trouble (at least in unsteady – maybe not such a big deal in steady).
    – Use HEC-RAS 1D-2D unsteady! ok ok I guess that is not an option w/ FEMA or your project…

    Good luck,

    Lee

Yes it is possible to model this situation.

If performing steady state, you can use Split Flow Optimization to help define the % of flow for each reach. Personally I would use unsteady state if that’s an option.

Make sure you have junction lengths and cross-section layouts done properly or you will get poor results. Also check whether you have overflow between reaches (between junctions) and if so, you may need to add lateral structures.

in reply to: Can storage area be an upstream source for a reach? #10955
    ldguethle
    Participant

Yes it can but be sure there is a good reason and that the resulting hydrograph in the reach is realistic, as well as the resulting stage in the storage area.

Agree it is unstable so there may be an issue unrelated to the lids. Check HTABs. Also, looks like you chopped off the edge of the culvert? It should come to a point assuming this is an arch culvert?

    ldguethle
    Participant

Yes, though be sure not to overlap too much or you will potentially double count volume (if the xsec station-elevation data is generated from the terrain). Also think about how you will lay our your lateral structures. In a perfect world the xsecs and lateral structures would snap to the 2D boundary edge. But some minimal overlap or gaps are generally ok.

    Cheers

Only way I can think of it is to make a Web Map Service (WMS) using RAS TileServer and link Google Earth to it. TileServer will need to run on your computer, or if it’s on another computer/server, you’ll need to make sure you can access it through Google Earth.

I have not had the opportunity/need to use a rating curve. However, generally you would use a downstream rating curve if:

    – you have a control structure that either can not be modeled or you don’t want to model it
    – normal depth is not matching up with a known, trusted rating curve at a cross-section (i.e., a USGS rating curve at a gage)

Along that approach, you could have two models with a low-resolution model =
feeding the high-resolution (smaller area) with an upstream flow hydrograph=
. Just depends on your situation if that would work and maintain a good sol=
ution at the boundaries and throughout the model.

Glad to see you making progress.

Whole model is more than 2GB. I reduced the size of project area for same t=

    Thank you again.

Got your files. Something is fishy. It instantly crashes for me as well.

I think your terrain file must have something wrong with it…. Send me bo=
th your original terrain file (ArcGIS raster zipped or if it was a TIF/JPG)=
and the RASMapper generated terrain files (TIF+VRT+HDF). Zip it all up.

Alternatively just zip up your whole model. =3D)
