    Hello.

I’m reading the User’s Manual and I have read on page 103 the option “add a Lid to XS”

I would like to know if there is a difference between “add a Lid to XS” and a typical culvert. Could I draw culverts with that?

    Thanks

Yes, you can add a lid to represent a typical culvert. The major difference between cross section with Lid and culvert is that a “culvert” can flow under Inlet Control and “XS with Lid” is only going to act like a culvert that is flowing under Outlet control.

Urgently need guidance from you guys. I believe I set up my model with lids quite correctly but when i compute to run simulation, I get a HEC-RAS error that there is no opening below the deck/lid, which stage did I miss or how exactly do I define this opening. Can some hook me up with a link where i can find a tutorial for this.

To answer the first question…x-sections with lids can represent culverts but also can be used to model broken back culverts which can not be done currently in the regular culvert data editor.

The second issue. If RAS is saying you have no opening you literally have no opening. Check all cross sections with lids and make sure that the banks stations are within the lid opening and not off to the left or right.

My bank stations are 0 and 1.2 m, the diameter of the inverted siphon I am trying to model is 1.2 m. As such such my bank stations for the lid is also 0 and 1.2 m, and I use the station in between to define a circular cross section. I am modelling a canal system that begins with an open canal section and it contracts into an inverted siphon for a stretch and then emerges into an open channel again. i am trying to model the system in hecras as one reach. the open canal bank stations are 0 and 3.1, but contracts into a 1.2 m diameter so here i use 0 and 1.2 for lidded cross section to represent siphon bank stations. Now after setting up, I get an error saying the is no opening below the lidded cross-sections. but the bank stations are both 0 and 1.2 for the cross-section and its lid, so it does not lie inside or outside. I am failing to progress from here, what are you gurus out there suggesting where do i need to make adjustments. you could contact me personally through facebook.

Question? AFter you set one lid on the cross section are you interpolating them downstream? This has always caused errors for me and is a bug.

Second i think using just a normal bridge culvert structure would be sufficient
