Hello,
Sorry for the amateur question. I am not an engineer but I was wondering if HEC-RAS is smart enough to transfer water from a river to its tributary at a junction and reduce the river level accordingly when calculating flood levels?
I have a tributary that is in a basin about the size of the river basin itself. The tributary is not capable of filling the basin during a 1% event but the river is. The tributary meets the river at an elevation of 483′ but the river is 505′, over 20′ higher. This means the river must fill in a width equal to its own during a 1% event to a depth of 20′ to a distance 3x its width. I expect this would have a significant effect on the river level.
Will HEC-RAS reduce the level of the river when doing backwater calculations?
If not, what is the best way to handle this?
Thank you for any information you are willing to provide!
