    Hello
Is it possible to extract Depth & velocity of water for each of the computational cells from HEC-RAS 5 results?

The values are stored in the *.p01.hdf file for every. The velocities are computed at corner nodes and depth is at cell center.

    Hi,
I am currently running a 2D simulation using Hec-Ras 6.1. Unfortunately, when trying to export the data (Velocity and depth as displayed in rasmapper) the *.p01.hdf does not contain the depth dataset. I have search all folders in the hdf file but can only find cell Velocity x/y, face shear stress, face velocity, log hydraulics, time step and water surface (path output/output blocks/base output/unsteady time series/2D flow areas/river). I also checked the 2D unsteady tutorials but they also do not contain a depth file when investigating the p01.hdf file. Please may you help me in exporting the flow depth, I require the flow depth for each cell so that I can export it to excel.
    Many thanks and kind regards,
    Stephanie

Hi Stephanie, that is because you have not selected the output options to write and export additional options. In the unsteady state plan editor, go to “output options” and on the last tab you can scroll down and see the additional output write options.

Just remember that RAS 6 offers multiple output options in comparison with RAS 5

    Hi Luis,
thank you so much for your help! Unfortunately, this is the first time I am using Hec-Ras. I have already explored the last tab “HDF5 Write Parameters” in the “set output control options” window but unfortunately there is no “Depth” option and all other cell related options do not seem to correspond to the values I receive in RasMapper (from what I understand Depth in RasMapper is calculated using the cell centre rather than the min elevation as for example used for the “Cell Invert Depth” option). I have also activated “Depth” in the “Computation Level Output Options” tab but it hasn’t helped either. I apologies for asking again but what option do I need to check in order to receive the same results for depth as shown in the RasMapper?

    Hi Luis,

I have managed to store the x-velocity and y-velocity to the hdf file, but i do not know how to view the hdf file. It is in binary form, but i need only cell centres and velocity components in ASCII form. Do you know how to extract this type of file structure from hdf?

I have managed to obtain a velocity vector file in a txt form (x,y,v_x,v_y) but the process was rather time consuming. I have used HDFview to open hdf file, later I seprataely exported node centre coordinates, the horizontal velocity component and vertical velocity component. Later I joined all this columns in a single file.

Does anybody know an easier way to get velocity vector values?
