Spill into 2D flow area from inline culvert

Hi,

I have a 1D river network with an inline culvert. The culvert will surcharge and spill at the location of inlet, flow overland following the line of the culvert initially before flowing perpendicular to the line of the culvert. What is the best way to represent this in HEC-RAS?

My initial thoughts were lateral structures at the upstream culvert XS however I cannot work out how to position them and the model keeps crashing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With long culverts, we have modeled the capacity of the culvert separately using a software like StormCAD and then modeled the overland flow path using HEC-RAS with the flow contained the culvert removed from the HEC-RAS reach.
