This one has me buffaloed. It’s been a while since I did a scour analysis but I don’t remember having this problem before.

On the input screens for ‘Hydraulic Design – Bridge Scour’ on the Pier Scour tab, if I try to enter anything in the ‘Angle’ box I get runtime error 11 – division by zero. If I try to enter anything in the pier width box, I get runtime error 5 – invalid procedure call or argument. Sometimes while going from one tab to another (such as from Contraction tab to Pier tab) I will get runtime error 9 – subscript out of range; and the program crashes.

I get the same errors whether using 4.0 or 4.1; whether using this particular data set or a different data set; whether on this machine running XP or on my laptop running Vista.

I looked on the HEC website and this doesn’t seem to be a known error.

    Thoughts?

The bridge scour routines in RAS have notoriously been buggy over the years. In an ideal world, run-time errors should never occur. If you input something incorrectly, error-catching scripts should avoid the runtime errors and give you a nice message telling you what you did wrong. You should send a bug report to HEC so that they can fix that.

I have been using the RAS scour module a lot lately and have experienced the same issue with the Pier data tab. I found that the Runtime Errors are generated when I try to enter data and “Apply to All Piers” is selected in the Pier # pulldown. If you select the piers individually to enter data it should work better.

Also, I have found that it’s necessary to keep a sharp eye on the parameters i revise on each tab, because sometimes the program will put the default values back when I switch to another tab. And if you hit the “Defaults” button, it will change all the tabs, not just the one you are working on.

    Good luck,
    Lisa

Thanks y’all. When I next have time I may try to put the data into the data file itself instead of entering on the input screen.

Make sure you have a pier actually defined in your bridge section and not just using upper and lower deck/roadway elevation limits to “define” your pier(s).
