A new version of RiverGIS, a free/libre GIS tool for HEC-RAS geometry creation, has just been released. It is inspired by HEC-GeoRAS and tries to mimic its workflow whenever it is possible. Plus, it can create 2D flow areas computational points aligned to structures. Please visit http://rivergis.com for more details.

Hecras is capable of aligning the cell faces along with structures in the 2D mesh with using breakline tool incorporated in the latest beta version(August-2015). I wonder if the rivergis extension has more advantages over breakline tool in 2D meshes. Why and When do we need the rivergis to better model our 2D mesh? Regards.

2D mesh tools are present in the RiverGIS since its early stage of development, when there was no breakline tool in HEC-RAS.

Currently RiverGIS has two options non-existing in HEC-RAS:
    1. you can align a few rows of points along a breakline, and
    2. you can locate breakpoints along breaklines if you need a cell faces at exact locations (at breakpoints)

Please, see example usage of the two at:
    http://rivergis.com/ras2d_geometry.html#create-2d-computational-points

The options were developed for a case of a channel with groins:
