Just a quick query to see if Ras2D is capable of handling the following scenario – have been having real trouble with joining the pieces together so far.

Large river flowing general north to south with 2d flow area at left overbank – connected via lateral weir and working ok when modelled by itself.

Smaller Tributary flowing from east to west which joins main river towards south of its reach. Trying to model the interaction between the 2 watercourses.

Can the small tributary flow through the 2d Area or must I cut it off where it flows “into” the 2d Area (shown approx in blue) as I suspect?

What you could do is trim the 2D area down and have lateral structures from both the main stem and tributary that are connected to the 2D areas (shown in red).

Another option would be to add the flow from the trib into the 2D area and not model it with cross-sections. This would require that the topographic data used for the 2D area picks up the channel, if not you could create a surface that combines the channel survey with the overbank terrain and use that.

    Thanks Cameron,

    2 useful suggestions.

My terrain for the 2d area is quite detailed and has the channels built in…..so I’m wondering if when you suggest adding the flow from the trib to the 2d area and not modelling it with cross sections do you mean in the manner of connecting an upstream reach directly to a downstream 2d flow area? Or is there another way of adding the flow without modelling the cross sections within?

    Thanks

You can apply boundary conditions directly to the 2D area without using cross-sections, you would just need to place it in the correct location.
