Modelling a waterfall

Hi everyone,

I’m quite new to HEC-RAS and I’m writing my thesis, using modelling to estimate paleoflood discharges. What I’m specifically trying to model is a huge waterfall (Asbyrgi in Iceland). However, instead of being straight, it is a amphitheater-shaped canyon and I’m don’t have a good idea how to make cross sections for this. Anyone has an idea what would be the best solution for this?

You should bend the cross sections to follow the shape of the amphitheater. Gradually transition back to straight cross sections as you move away from the waterfall. Cross sections should always be drawn and oriented so that they are perpendicular to the direction of flow, even if the direction of flow changes over the length of the cross section.
Then use an inline structure for the waterfall.

Alternatively, you can model this with a 2D mesh and use a SA/2D Area connection for your waterfall.

You should bend the cross sections to follow the shape of the amphitheater.=
Gradually transition back to straight cross sections as you move away fro=
m the waterfall. Cross sections should always be drawn and oriented so that=
they are perpendicular to the direction of flow, even if the direction of =
flow changes over the length of the cross section.
Then use an inline structure for the waterfall.

Alternatively, you can model this with a 2D mesh and use a SA/2D Area conne=
ction for your waterfall.
