I am using version 5.0.3 to work with two different models that were created in version 4.1.0. Both models run without any errors. However, RAS Mapper frequently gets stuck computing the XS interpolation surfaces either after I have made a change to the geometry file or tried to re compute the bank lines or XS interpolation surfaces in RAS Mapper by right clicking on the layer. The only solution I have found so far is to replace either the geometry file or corresponding hdf file with an archived version that RAS Mapper did not have errors with and then keep editing the geometry until the error occurs again. I’ve tried deleting the hdf file for the geometry and the .rasmap file and reopening HEC RAS but Mapper still gets stuck computing the XS interpolation surfaces. Has anyone else had this problem?

Multiple people have reported this problem and there does not seem to be a simple answer to fix it. Generally people have recreated the cross-section layers by exporting and then importing into a new geometry. I would recommend checking the cross-sections that none are overlapping or changes between to cross-sections is not to great.

I had the same issue with my geometry with over 200 xs cut lines. I tried to identify the problem causing xs cut line. But I figured out it were multiple.

My solution for the problem was: Tools -> XS Interpolation: Within a Reach

Apparently the differences between my xs cut lines were to great (whether this was height, distance or width I don’t know).

By adding interpoled xs cut lines for the whole reach, I fixed all the problems.

I’m converting multiple RAS 4.1 models to RAS 5.X, and running into this a lot too. RAS 5.0.5 seems to be more forgiving than RAS 5.0.3, so if you can switch to that, do it. If you have to use 5.0.3, or you are still having problems, maybe the below suggestion will help.

My models at issue are all non-georeferenced… I’m just trying to upgrade my simple 1-D models to use RAS 5. The XS interpolation surface isn’t very important for these models because my main goal is XS elevations and profiles, not a pretty map from RAS Mapper.

The fix for me was to re-arrange the stick diagram in geometric data editor. I had confluences where main-river XS lines overlapped with tributary XS lines, and similar things that would pose a problem for a computer trying to create an elevation surface in between those lines. I went to Edit… Move Points/Objects… and re-arranged the lines so they didn’t overlap and looked like something I could draw a surface in between.

This worked, but with larger models with many tribs and pseudo-georeferencing, it was frustrating, because some XSs would redraw way off the map unless I tweaked the furthest upstream and furthest downstream cross section for each reach.

The nice thing about this solution is that I’m not modifying the actual hydraulic model in any way. Other suggested solutions included moving bank stations and adding interpolated XS, but I wanted to avoid those because they technically create a change to the geometry/hydraulics.
