What is best to use (and where)? When a main channel and a tributary meet at a junction, and there is a structure (RCP culvert) at the downstream end of the tributary.
Do I model with an inline structure along the tributary?
Do I model with a lateral structure along the main channel?

Great question! I would say if you expect flows to rise in the main channel, over top the structure and flow up the tributary, then model it as a lateral structure off the main channel. Otherwise, use an inline structure. Keep in mind, that if you use an inline structure, you’ll have to have at least 2 cross sections downstream of the inline structure before the junction.

Even better, try both and let us all know which works better!

    Good luck-

The culvert outfall protrudes the main channel walls (actually, the RCP sticks out about 3 feet into the main channel). I don’t have space for 2 additional downstream sections, other than the profile of the bottom of the main channel itself; and even then, the sections would be about 5 feet from each other.

I’ll go with the lateral structure, and report on how it went. Nonetheless, thanks for the advise, it saved me some time.

    Regards,
