    Hello everyone,

I am building my 2D mesh and have quite fine resolution at some areas to capture natural barriers/ridges/levees and whatnot.

I have imported the shapefiles of the features as breaklines and use small spacing along them to ensure they are accurately captured.

This breakline resulted in many cells with >8 sides (several hundred) that I really don’t want to go through manually and delete/alter.

Is there a way to fix this quickly in RASMapper?

    Thanks,

    Derek

No there isnt. You have to remove the breakline. The shapefile is causing this error because the shapefile probably has thousands of vertices and sharp turns and angles…just reference the shapefile in but trace over it manually and just go ridge by ridge.

Just know the end goal is for water to accuratley be represented within the terrain. If you import shapefiles it sometimes over complicates a 2D mesh in areas where theres no possible way for water to get to. Especially when you are not modeling precipitation.

You could try changing the near and far spacing values until they provide a good match with surrounding grid so that the errors are reduced

Luis – that is the problem I am trying to fix..I basically have an area confined by levees on either side…the side on the river is captured by the fine river grid but the outer levee was falling in an area with large grid cells…so water ended up getting “trapped” (or looks like it?) in between the levees when it’s obvious water shouldnever be getting in there in the first place

I’m hoping creating fine cells directly along the ridge will capture the feature accurately and prevent water from flowing in…this is the only way I have been able to model barriers/obstacles in HECRAS2D..unless you have suggestions?

ckatsoulas – this is what I’ve been trying first, and got the errors down quite a bit (also tried decimating the shapefile points) but was turning into a struggle, think I’m going to resort to just manually tracing them

Draw a breakline in the area where water should not, once done select the breakline and convert it to a internal 2DSA connection. In the weir copy the terrain data along the line (option in the weir editor). Take it to excel, add 2 feet to the terrain data and paste it into the weir editor. Now you have a 2-ft wall.

I’ve found that using refinement regions can often provide for reduced cell errors. This is particularly true when the break line needs to close on itself.

There is a fix command in Mapper, but it is hit or miss as it just splits the cells with >8 sides in half.
