I am trying to run HEC-2 files without having to go through the work of editing all of the bridge data in HEC-RAS. I can however not find the HEC-2 download. Does anyone know where I can still get the program or is has HEC-2 converted into HEC-HMS? I am quite new to hydraulic modeling and have only been using HEC-RAS. Also the reason for not wanting to use HEC-RAS is that I have a large reach with multiple bridge culverts and our study is just involving a small portion with an addition of a cross section.

    Thank you, Ben

You might as well make the effort to convert the model to HEC-RAS. HEC-2 will not run on Windows 7 and later computers unless you set up a virtual computer running XP. XP is no longer available from Microsoft, so good luck in finding a copy.

Also if you are going to have to submit this to FEMA, they will no longer accept HEC-2. I doubt most of the regulators will accept it either. Only older regulators and reviewers are probably going to be able to adequately review any HEC-2 submittal since most of the younger ones will not have had any experience with the program and its input/output. HEC-2 was replaced by HEC-RAS about 15 years ago.

HEC-HMS is the replacement program for HEC-1 and is a hydrology program. HEC-1 has the same problems as HEC-2, it will not run on Windows 7 and later operating systems.

Incorrect on a couple of counts.

    1. HEC-2 will run on Windows 7, but I think the restriction is 64-bit hardware. I needed to run HEC-2 and it complained about my work computer being 64-bit. I dragged in an old 32-bit laptop with Windows 7 and it works just fine in a CMD window.

This may be your issue with HEC-HMS too…

    2. Prince George’s County, MD accepts HEC-2 models (welcome to the 20th Century). They may be doing modeling of new floodplains in HEC-RAS, but a crapton of their old models haven’t been converted (and I suspect never will be).
