Hi there when computing an Unsteady Flow Analysis it completes however notifies me of some H5G errors as seen below in the running script (Ive also come accross HD5 errors and also wandering what those are). Is anyone able to explain what these mean/ If I need to do anything about this?

First I would update to the 5.0.3 version of HEC-RAS to see if that fixes the problem. HDF is the new file format for HEC-RAS and results get stored in the *.01p.hdf. This issue could have to do with writing to the hdf file and you may need to delete the hdf file and have HEC-RAS recreate it. Are these files located on your local machine or from a network? I would also trying running the model on a different machine and see if the error is still there.

Thanks for your reply Cameron, Unfortunately I am working on a business PC’s (all with HECRAS 5.0.1) that will not allow updates of any software until July each year (Crazy I know) (I only own a Mac myself). Thank you for the explanation, that makes some sense.

These files are on LocalData on the computer itself, I have tried may different computers with the same error.

Hi. I’m currently using HEC RAS 5.0.5. I think it is the latest version as of now. I’m having similar errors with you. My model is a simple dam breach model where I have:

    – storage area (upstream)
    – SA/2D connection (dam with breach plan)
    – 2D Flow Area (downstream)

I’ve tried it with and without boundary conditions (original plan is to not include any BC but just tried to put a BC downstream just to see if it affects the simulation). However, the errors are still there. Here are the errors:

    Unsteady flow encountered an error.

    HDF5-DIAG: Error detected in HDF5 (1.8.11) thread 0:

Error starting unsteady simulation – Stopping compute process

I hope anyone can help. I've seen in another thread you can download an hdf5 in https://www.hdfgroup.org but I don't really know how to go about it. :(( Thanks in advance for any help out there.

Rectify that the normal depth is downstream and the hydrograph is upstream.

Hi there – I am getting a similar error that causes my model to crash. Error is below. I am trying to run a model that runs fine in 5.0.6, but gives these errors and crashes when I try to run it in 6.1. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I realized this only happened for a certain geometry file within my model and a very wise coworker just helped me resolve the issue – if you select the box for Geometry Preprocessor in the Unsteady Flow Analysis window, it runs! I hope this helps others with the same problem.
