EGL Issues in Unsteady Flow

I’m working on an unsteady flow run for a simple single reach channel. I’m getting crazy EGL spikes and peaks varying throughout the unsteady flow run. These spikes are giant (water surface elevation ~4000 and EGL elevation ~10000 or more). I’ve already tried editing the HTab max points (now 500), decreasing the increment, and setting starting el to the invert elevation. Any ideas for where this model is going so far off the rails?

check the time step you are using and the flow area change between cross-sections.
