Edit junction – Lenght across Junction

Hi everybody. I need a little explenation about default way to create a junction. Once created it, if i click on that junction and press edit it shows me the junction lenght . apparently they are referred to the

1) distance from the downstream section of the upstream reach to the upstream section of the downstream reach. (for the main river)
2) distance from the downstream section to the junction (for the tributary).

are these correct? where can i find more informations?
