    Hi All,

I have a unique situation that I’m trying to tackle and haven’t found the best solution yet. I’m running a dam break analysis where there is a concrete primary spillway and an earthen emergency spillway. Simple enough however, the emergency spillway flows to a pond that is offline from the primary spillway discharge point, into a small stream. Flow from the pond would then re-enter the stream further downstream of the dam via a closed conduit. What is the best way to set this configuration up in HEC-RAS? Currently I have the model successfully running the sunny day scenario as 1D with dynamic reservoir draw down, but this scenario doesn’t involve the offline pond.

    Any insight would be helpful.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

If you are trying to stay all 1D:

I would model the dam and concrete spillway with an inline structure. I would use a lateral structure to model the emergency spillway that diverts water. The pond could be either a 1D storage area or a series of cross sections.

The closed conduit could be modeled using a culvert, gate, or cross sections with lids. If you use a culvert or gate, you could use another lateral structure to return the flow. For cross sections with lids, you would have to use a junction to return the flow.

In this approach, the dam break has to be either on the main inline structure or the lateral structure.

Another approach would be 2D. It could all be done inside of a single 2D area and the dam could be a single 2D connector. You would have to do the conduit as a gate or culvert (not cross sections with lids).

This is a very generic error and cannot provide any real answer.

Does the model run without the breach?
