    Anyone have any ideas what model settings or setup I should be looking at to determine why my dam break results in spurting flood waves?

    Probably your time step is way too high.

    I see this behavior with 15 second calculation time steps and 1 minute outputs.

    are you using full momentum or diffusion wave solver?

    Spurting waves is either a representative of software limitations or instabilities. The limitations of slope will always represent graphically waves going down a high steeping slope. The only way to fix this is to use different variations in cell orientation. Mapping output interval can also do this.

    If this is a full 2D breach im almost certain it is due to either one of those shown above. If your mass balance is within an appropriate percent error than youre fine
