Critical Depth Defaulting

“The energy equation could not be balanced within the specified number of iterations. The program used critical depth for the water surface and continued the calculations.”

This is probably my least favorite error that I run into… how do other people typically go about addressing it? I see this a lot for flows that are just beginnning to go overbank onto a very flat floodplain. I have spent much time tinkering with ineffective flow areas but typically without much improvement. Anyone else have any tips on how to tweak the model to remove this error and allow computations to continue upstream?

Have you tried adding more cross-sections? I would first add interpolated cross-sections to see if this helps and then add real cross-sections if it does.
