At the moment it seems that the 1D channel can only be connected to 2D area by means of a lateral structure and it will only be connected to the boundary cells of the 2D area. However, this is not user friendly when we model a highly interconnected loopy canal network. Is there any method to connect 1D channels to mid cells of a 2D area.

No. Its actually very user friendly. If you understand 1D/2D connections and the rules that are associated with them, you should never require or would want to connect the “middle” of a 2D area
