Any methods to define the flow direction of lateral gate?

Dear,

I am modelling a river system with storage area. Using lateral gate to control the water, however, when the water level in storage area higher than the main river channel, the water will goes back to the river. More specifically, if the range of storage area is 15m – 28m, when the water level in main river is 26m, starts to open the gate, maybe the water level in storage area arise to 25m and if we do not close gate, when the flood peak pass, the water in storage area will go back to main river. So, how can I define the flow direction. Meanwhile, there is another question, how can I totally fill the storage area?

Have you tried using “Rules” for the gates to control how it operates? There is also an option to turn on flap gates for the lateral structure to control which way flow can go.
