I haven’t been able to find out best ways to transition from a 1D/2D section to a full 1D section (or full 1D to 1D/2D). The issue is how do I make flow in the overbank 2D area of the 1D/2D section show up in the downstream full 1D XS. RAS manuals describe the full 2D to full 1D connection method and the 1D connection to 2D with lateral weir, but not really the situation I just described. I am thinking about using a small storage area to transition between the two. I would connect both the 1D and 2D portions of the 1D/2D section to the small storage area and then connect that to the downstream 1D section. I got this idea from the Dec 2018 blog post “Using a HEC-RAS Storage Area and Lateral Structures to Replace Standard Reach Junctions”. Please let me know if anybody has developed a better method or has any relevant comments. Thanks!

I would have to see screen shots to see what you even mean. That was a very confusing read

I have not set up anything in RAS, but maybe the following will illustrate better.

    The problem:

    Hopefully this is helpful.

Why not just extend the lateral weir/2D area far enough downstream until the 2D flow makes it back over the weir and into to the 1D portion? Then keep going with 1D only downstream from there.

That is a good recommendation. However, the model I am working on is located
in very flat coastal plain and it might be several miles before the 2D flow
returns to the river if at all. Also the model is very large at over 100
river miles. I only want to add 2D in the overbanks at key sections where
flood damages have occurred in the past to minimize run times. More 2D area
usually equals more run time. Thanks!

Why not just extend the lateral weir/2D area far enough downstream until the

What do you think of the following:
    – split the 1D cross section into 2 separate channels/rivers side by side, one for the main channel/river and one for the overbank.
    – send the upstream 1D to the main channel cross sections
    – send the 2D area to the overbank 1D sections
    – join the 2 rivers downstream with a junction
    – use a lateral weir to allow flow between the main and overbank channels upstream of the junction.

What do you think of the following:
    – split the 1D cross section into 2 separate channels/rivers side by side,
one for the main channel/river and one for the overbank.
    – send the upstream 1D to the main channel cross sections
    – send the 2D area to the overbank 1D sections
    – join the 2 rivers downstream with a junction
    – use a lateral weir to allow flow between the main and overbank channels
    upstream of the junction.

The most applicable way is to use laterals like below. The thing it’ll be missing is what flow is trapped in the overbank. What is in the 2D and crosses the lateral will be put in the channel and then spill out into the 1D floodplain. This is usally okay though since you would usually expect the downstream floodplain to have flow if the 2D is carrying flow.
