HEC-RAS 6.0 beta is now available!

Written by Chris Goodell | December 16, 2020

RAS Users!  Go get your copy of HEC-RAS 6.0 beta.  It’s now available!!!
I’ve had the opportunity to test drive the new 2D bridge feature and it is AWESOME!  Very easy to use and finally gives us the ability to model bridges in 2D!!!  HEC will also make available some data sets to demonstrate how these new features work.
Also…Stay Tuned for an upcoming Full Momentum Vodcast where we’ll interview Gary Brunner about all of these new features.

From Gary Brunner, Lead Developer of HEC-RAS:  “I am very happy to announce that we just release HEC-RAS 6.0.0 Beta.  This version represents the most significant release of HEC-RAS since the original 5.0 release that contained 2D modeling capabilities.   This Beta version is being placed on our normal web page, and will be available for anyone to download and try out.  As HEC-RAS Beta Testers, you are hearing about it first through this email.  The Beta test period will last approximately three months, depending on how many bugs are found and the time needed to fix them.   New documentation comes with the software (PDF files), but we now also have an online presence for documentation.  The online documentation has an area for “Known Issues”.  We will be keeping this up to date as issues are discovered in the Beta version.  So please monitor this page before sending us any bugs you find.  You can also get to the Bug Report portion of the RAS web page from the Know Issues page, or go directly to the normal HEC-RAS web page to send us any bugs you find.

Where is HEC-RAS 5.1? Any notes and stories about that version?

HEC skipped 5.1 and went right to 6.0 beta.

Santa came early! This is such a huge update.

I noticed that Version 6 could not handle bridge structure in a 2 D Area with S.I unite.. The Htab Curve seemed to be stating from Head elevation zero instead of the channel invert.

Good news for hydraulic modelers. The bridges as internal “boundary” condition are working and very easy to use it (like in the traditional 1 D) so it is a very great advance in water modeling. Like the 2D bridge the dam as internal boundary it is working and similar results than the dam as 2d storage boundary condition or the dam as inline structuree. It is nice to confirm results with the dambreak and floodwave software. Now we are going to check the sediment transport ( we use the He6 previously) and later the gridded Rainfall. But I think that HEC will recover the 1st postion in water modelling even because I always have thought that it was the best one.

This has made my 2D modeling so much easier already. I did notice between 6.0 and 5.0.7 I get the error “Unable to compute face tables. The terrain associated with this geometry does not completely cover the 2D Flow Area” if I regenerate my computation points, despite my terrain extending well beyond my mesh.

Thank you for the update. HEC had told me there was a practical limit of about a million cells, possibly unintentionally, in Version 5. Has anyone had a chance to determine if the limit of a million cells has been improved significantly with Version 6?

I downloaded the User Manual for this new Beta Version but that needs a password to open. Please guide

Not sure. I don’t need a password. Did you try opening it directly from the Help menu item in RAS?

Nope, downloaded manual from their site first. Now would install this new version and open from help. Thanks

Hi, I’ve been trying to access the RAS download page during the last days and the pages are not loading. Does anybody know what is happening?

I’ve experienced with new beta Version, having some issues (problems)
    1. Time series data starts after the simulations starts
This happened when I ‘save as’ the project and change the unsteady flow data to a historic flood event. All settings are good and the model run perfectly in 5.07 Version, but it stopped at very beginning with 6.0 Beta updated 1. The problem of ‘Time series data starts after the simulations starts’ persisted even I tried to modified starting/ending time both in unsteady flow and simulation plan files
    2. Somewhat result layers run by 5.0x versions do not shown up in Ras Mapper 6.0. However it allows me to extract the profiles data
    3. It is still not allowed to add an aerial photography or satellite imagery having 3 bands. I tried to add an image extension *.img and *.tif , none worked
    4. It is quite useful sometime we need to plot terrains above a background image. Ras Mapper does not allow this. Hope new version will allow Terrains to move up Map Layers
    5. View results in 3D mode is terribly slow. My model is 765k cells and grid sizes of 1-20m, poss processing file (hdf) is ~720 MB, it took so long to load 3D Viewer and impossible to use fly modes to view the results

Hi, as same as Sandra i have problems trying to access to the web site by us army corp of engineering (https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/software/hec-ras/download.aspx), and the page is not downloading. Can anyone help me with this?
    Thank you

Marco, all I can say is keep trying. Not sure why it’s not working for you.

Hi, Maybe it’s just me – but the units for Green-Ampt methods are a bit confusing. I’m working in SI units, the manual says inches or centimetres, the data entry screen says inches, the value provided in the manual are in mm, I’ve a test run using inches but virtually no losses, and I’ve tried mm and the results make no sense. Any advice?

  19. Chris Goodell

    on February 23, 2021

Sounds like HEC needs to work on the units labeling with this new feature. I suggest sending a bug report to HEC to let them know.

    hello everyone
I have installed both hec ras 5.0.7 and6.0 beta 3 version in my laptop. my laptop window have 4gb ram and 64 bit windows 8.1operating system.
i am unable to open RAS mapper in both 5.0.7 and 6.0 beta 3 . how to fixed the problem.

    Hi Chris.
I have time series with 2.5 min intervals. How to create such interval of time series in HEC-RAS or HEC-HMS or HEC-DSSVue. I see only 1 min, 2 min, 3 min intervals. Is there a way to get time series with 2.5 min interval?
    Thanks in advance.
